The Shillong Sports Association’s Women’s League began at the MFA Turf at Third Ground, Polo, here today, with two action-packed matches.
In the first, last season’s runners-up Laitkor SC defeated Umpling SC 6-0, while PFR Football Academy then stormed to a 16-0 whitewash of Mawkriah West SC.
This is the second edition of the SSA’s Women’s League, the first of which was won by Mawlai SC last year. Mawlai will be back again this year to defend their crown. They have been drawn with Iasnohktilang Madanrting FC, Lumparing SC, Kharang SC, Synroplang 77 and Maw U-Tieng SC in Group B.
Group A consists of Laitkor SC, Umpling SC, PFR Football Academy, Mawkriah West SC, Kick Start Academy and Lawei Smit SC.
Speaking before the opening fixture, SSA Vice-President Karsing Kurbah said that the first season was a tremendous success, with several of the participating players going on to be signed by clubs from around the country and that has encouraged the SSA to continue and improve the Women’s League this year.
Also present on the occasion were SSA General Secretary SS Rapthap, and other senior office bearers Prosper Warjri, Cliff Nongrum and Dipshon Lyngdoh Nongbri.
Iaraplang Nongrum scored as many as five goals for Laitkor, with some thunderous strikes that have already set her out as a potential top player.
Tomorrow’s two matches will be in Group B. At 2:30pm Lumparing SC will face Kharang SC and at 4:15pm Mawlai SC will take on Iasnohktilang FC.
The top two sides from each group will progress to the semifinals, which have been scheduled for 14 July, with the date for the final to be notified in due course.
