The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) in West Khasi Hills has objected to the appointment of non-local Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) for post deliveries in villages under the district.
According to the HYC there are six GDSs appointed in the district for doorstep delivery of mail at Byrki, Jaidoh, Mawlieh, Nongtynniaw, Nongkasen and Shyrkon.
District President Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh and General Secretary Wanteibok Lyngdoh met the Senior Superintendent of Post Office in Shillong today with an objection the appointment stating that the office should appoint locals who could understand the language.
Kharsyiemlieh said that the dorbar shnongs who have issued no objection certificates to non-local GDS to withdraw. He said the centre should ensure recruitment of locals and the state government to take up the matter.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya government had recently urged the Centre to amend the draft model notification of the Department of Posts by prescribing knowledge of local language spoken in Meghalaya.
As per the draft model notification of the department, Hindi or English are the prescribed local language as criteria for the recruitment. The FKJGP which spearheaded the demand felt that this will deprive the chances of local youth to avail this employment opportunity as· they have to compete with candidates from outside the State who normally score better in these languages especially Hindi.
