Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun today hailed the recent surprise inspections carried out by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) in Byrnihat, describing them as a positive step toward curbing industrial violations and protecting the environment.
Speaking to the media, Sohtun said, “The government’s direction and MSPCB’s move to conduct surprise inspections is a welcome development. It’s a success in identifying factories that may be violating pollution control norms and I’m happy to see such proactive steps being taken.”
However, the MLA emphasised that these inspections should not be a one-off event. “This should not just be a one-time measure. It should continue regularly so that industrialists don’t find opportunities to flout the rules set by the MSPCB,” he added.
Highlighting the need for a more permanent presence of the pollution control body in Byrnihat, Sohtun expressed strong support for MSPCB’s proposal to acquire land and set up an office in the industrial area. “We’ve had discussions time and again about this. Byrnihat being an industrial estate requires a permanent MSPCB office and staff stationed here. Currently, surprise inspections involve officials traveling from Shillong. If information leaks during that time, the purpose is defeated. But with a local office, authorities can act swiftly and effectively.”
The MLA further pointed out the challenges residents face due to unchecked industrial pollution. “We, as permanent residents, witness firsthand how much the rules are being violated. The pollution has deeply affected people’s lives.”
He also stressed the need for cross-border collaboration, given that the Byrnihat industrial area falls within both Meghalaya and Assam. “We cannot say the pollution is only from Assam or Meghalaya. It affects people from both sides. As MLA, I will take the initiative to meet my counterpart in Assam so we can address this jointly.”
Sohtun added, “Stern action must be taken by the government against any factories found violating the rules laid down by MSPCB.”
