Residents of Sohra held a peaceful candle light vigil for murdered Indore tourist, Raja Raghuvanshi, on Tuesday and rallied against the false narratives portrayed by the national media and unsubstantiated accusations online.
The candlelight vigil and the rally was organised by the Hima Sohra. Thousands of residents’ lit candles, offered prayers, and expressed solidarity with the family of Raja, who was allegedly murdered by his wife Sonam and her four accomplices.
Residents of the Sohra rely on tourism for their livelihood. The incident has threatened the reputation of Sohra and Meghalaya, with accusations that it is unsafe and downright dangerous for visitors, until the Meghalaya police made a breakthrough in the case.
“Always check your news before jumping to conclusions,” one of the banners read at the rally. People reminded the media to verify reports before airing or publishing and “never point fingers without proof.”
Reaffirming Sohra’s values of peace, hospitality, and respect for human life another placard reads, “We tribal love all our guests. This is our tradition.”
The people have demanded an apology from the national media and individuals on social media, responsible for spreading false and defamatory content about Sohra.
The peace rally was organised by the Hima Sohra, starting from the Syiem’s office in Ïew Sohra and proceeding all the way to Saitsohpen. Local MLA Gavin Mylliem, MDC Titosstarwell Chyne, Syiem of Sohra Freeman Sing Syiem and Deputy Syiem Marremdor Syiem were also present.
