In a move to enhance livestock development and bolster the rural economy, the state government has commenced the establishment of a Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank (RSPL&SB) at Kyrdemkulai in Ri-Bhoi.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, aims to improve breeding practices for sheep and goats, thereby increasing productivity and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
The foundation stone for the facility was laid on Thursday by Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Alexander Laloo Hek in the presence of Principal Secretary FR Kharkongor, Director Dr M Kharchandy and other senior officials and stakeholders. The event also saw participation from local livestock farmers and community members.
Hek emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector, stating that the RSPL&SB will serve as a critical infrastructure for genetic improvement programmes. He highlighted that the facility will not only enhance the quality of livestock but also contribute to the economic upliftment of rural communities through increased income from animal husbandry activities.
The Kyrdemkulai area already hosts several related facilities, including the Regional Crossbred Cattle Breeding Farm, Regional Pig Breeding Farm and the Regional Poultry Breeding Farm, all aimed at supporting livestock development in Meghalaya.
