The in-charge district magistrate, East Khasi Hills has imposed an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting dumping of solid waste along the stretch of Umkhen River.
The order comes after reports that solid waste is being dumped indiscriminately in the Umkhen river and along certain stretches of Wah Rting and other drainage connected to Umkhen river.
“Such act of polluting the river if allowed to continue is likely to cause health hazards and also affect the environment of the area,” the order said.
Pollution of Umshyrpi and Umkhrah rivers have always been the issue raised by different organisations in various platforms. Now Umkhen is a big worry as it is fast becoming a dumping ground for waste.
Umkhen river flows through Thembasuk, Madanrting block D and E and Jyntah.
