The ‘Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu’ (Clean Myntdu River) has strongly criticised Dhar Construction Company and the office of the Executive Engineer PWD (Roads) for allowing the flow of debris and mud into the Myntdu at Dam Ser.
All the debris has come from the ongoing project to widen the Dawki-Amlarem-Jowai Road.
Stating that the reckless construction by the company has also affected passersby, including students and the shopkeepers at Jowai market coming from War Jaiñtia areas, KYM president Khroo L Pariat said that there have been several landslides since the onset of the rainy season this year and complaints to the Public Works Department have been in vain.
“These illegal doings of the Dhar Construction Company and noninterference by the concerned office has not only adversely affected River Myntdu but also filled the reservoir dam at Mupiah with mud,” Pariat said, adding that the reservoir supplies water to the people of Jowai.
The flow of mud has also affected farmlands downstream of Syntu Ksiar up to Ïalong and farmers fear that this will adversely affect their harvest.
“Looking at the indecisiveness of the PWD (Roads) and the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaiñtia Hills to this destruction caused to the River Myntdu, we urge all inhabitants surrounding the river, especially those in Jowai, to stand together against this illegality before it’s too late,” Pariat added.
