Jowai, Aug 3: Ten opposition members of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) have demanded Rs 50 lakh each and alleged discrimination in the allotment of Rs 28.5 crore received under the 16th Finance Commission for 2026-27.
According to the opposition MDCs, only Rs 20 lakh each was earmarked for them, while approximately Rs 1.36 crore each was allotted to 19 ruling members.
The MDCs met with the Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat to raise the issue. In a letter, the MDCs termed the distribution “biased and unproportionate” and a “serious breach of privileges”, saying central funds meant for public welfare should be distributed proportionately to all elected members irrespective of political affiliation.
The MDCs asked the EC to communicate in writing by August 4 that Rs 50 lakh be earmarked for each opposition member. They warned that failure to act would compel them to take “necessary steps against this kind of stepmother treatment”.
Citing KHADC where funds were allocated equally to all 29 members, the opposition urged the JHADC executive to ensure equal distribution, stating the current allotment is “an insult to the people who elected them”.
