Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon visited the water source of Umroi Madan village in Ri-Bhoi, which is reportedly under threat from a planned road project.
The plan to build a four-lane road from Lad Umroi to Malidor would, according to villagers, cut through Umroi Madan’s lone source of water if the current alignment is used. The villagers are also in dispute with the village leaders, who have sought to brush aside the opposition to the plan.
Syngkon climbed the hill that leads to the water source accompanied by residents today. He took the initiative to visit the area out of concern for the people regarding the fear of the potential impact the construction of the road would have.
The MP said that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corp Ltd (NHIDCL), which is the company that is implementing the project, should take the initiative to check the alignment properly and make sure that the project does not negatively affect the people.
Meanwhile, representatives from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Water Resources Department and NHIDCL informed after the inspection that they will discuss this matter seriously and make sure the alignment of the four-lane road will not affect the village’s source of water drinking.
