A group of women from the Tyrso area of Ri-Bhoi today met with the district’s Deputy Commissioner to demand their right to receive ration cards as sanctioned under the National Food Security Act 2013.
More than 100 women from the Tyrso area gathered at the DC’s office seeking clarification on why many of them have not received ration cards since 2011.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Iohilut Lyngdoh and other women explained that their visit aimed to meet the DC and seek answers regarding the lack of ration card distribution to eligible households.
The women further pointed out that many among them continue to live below the poverty line, making the timely allocation of ration cards critical for their survival and well-being.
The DC, Abhilash Baranwal, acknowledged their concerns but explained that the delay was due to the lack of fresh ration card allocations by the central government.
The national census was due in 2021 but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and has still not been held. This is believed to be holding up the approval of new ration cards.
