The Ri-Bhoi Tourism and Environmental Development Forum (RBTEDF) today expressed deep concern over the illegal burning of forest in the district and urged immediate corrective steps to protect the environment.
Several major fires during the ongoing dry season have wreaked havoc in forests around Ri-Bhoi.
Speaking to this reporter here, the Chairman of the RBTEDF, Plielad Tiewsoh, said that local villages must address the issue of forest fires in the district.
“Burning of forests will lead to the destruction of the environment, including animals and medicinal plants,” Tiewsoh said, adding that the government has to work with village authorities to stop the wanton destruction.
Forest fires can easily spread uncontrollably and damage or destroy human habitations and lives as well, he cautioned.
