Ri-Bhoi police successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle gold at a checkpoint at Kyrdeng, seizing Rs 35 lakh worth of the precious metal.
Acting on reliable information, a checkpoint was set up by police and an Assam-registered vehicle (AS 01 DT 7519) was intercepted.
Two occupants, both from Rajasthan, were identified as Vinod Kumar Sharma and Lalshyam Sharma and they were detained.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, the police seized six gold biscuits, each weighing 10 tolas, from Vinod’s possession.
In addition to the gold, two mobile phones found inside the vehicle were also seized by the authorities. The police are continuing to investigate the smuggling operation.
