The Dorbar Shnong of Rwiang has said it will allow Shree Shakambari Ferro Alloys’ factory to resume its operations only if it complies with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and minimise air pollution levels.
A delegation of the Dorbar Shnong led by Sordar Wiljou Iawphniaw met with the Chairman of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board on Thursday with an appeal that concerns of the village should be taken into consideration before withdrawing the closure notice.
The factory was shut down on February 23 after the dorbar shnong objected to the environmental violations, including haphazard disposal of fly ash, which threatened to pollute the Rwiang River.
The dorbar warned that they would not hesitate to close the factory again if it fails to protect the environment.
Member Secretary CH Chyrmang told reporters that the board had shut down the factory for over three months.
The task force in its inspection report indicated that the factory had complied with its directive and hence the board decided to withdraw the closure notice, which is in accordance with the law, he said.
