Shillong, Jun 11: To address plastic pollution, authorities in West Khasi Hills have issued a stern warning to shopkeepers and vendors regarding the storage of single-use plastic products.
During an awareness programme organised by the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Nongstoiñ, officials reminded attendees that starting July 1, 2022, select single-use plastic items are banned to protect the environment and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Assistant Commissioner E. Wanniang and Executive Engineer of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Y.F. Laloo regular inspections are being scheduled across local markets and commercial areas to ensure adherence to these regulations.
Officials have urged the public to shift from using single-use plastics to more environmentally friendly options like cloth and jute bags. They emphasised that any vendors found stocking or selling prohibited plastic items would face legal repercussions, including confiscation of goods.
Also present were the Secretary of the Shnong, Secretary of the Seng Mahajon, Dmikstar Lyngdoh, and other stakeholders.
