The owner of Economic pharmacy has expressed regret over his actions during the eviction drive of unauthorised hawkers and street vendors on June 30.
Devendra Singhania of Economic Medical Hall in a press statement today said a confrontation arose when a group of individuals attempted to occupy space within his compound without any prior communication or consent.
“I would like to clearly state that I had no intention to cause hurt, insult, or disrespect anyone, particularly to the Hynñiewtrep women. I did not attempt to drive anyone away from the road, as has been inaccurately portrayed on social media,” he said.
Sighania said his reaction was solely in response to an emotionally charged situation and acted out of his character, which he regretted as it does not reflect his principles or intentions.
“If any sentiments were hurt it was purely unintentional, I express my sincere regret and feel sorry,” he added.
As a resident of Shillong for over 150 years, he said, his family have always maintained a relationship of mutual respect and harmony with the community. “At no point have we engaged in any action intended to disrupt peace or hurt anyone’s sentiments,” he said.
Singhania also called on the people to work together to keep Shillong peaceful and inclusive irrespective of caste or community.
