Shillong, Jul 20: National People’s Party (NPP) national working president James Pangsang Kongal Sangma was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on the first day of the Monsoon session
Sangma, the elder brother of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, was elected unopposed to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya.
The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan. James took the oath in Hindi.
He was accompanied by the chief minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with other party leaders.
“Accompanied my brother Shri @JamesSangma1 during his oath taking ceremony as Hon’ble Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya. Wishing him Godspeed on his new role. May he be the voice of our people and continue to contribute meaningfully to our state and nation,” Conrad wrote on X.
The newly-elected members who took the oath on the first day of the Monsoon session included BJP member Satish Poonia from Rajasthan, Congress member Pawan Khera from Karnataka and three BJP members from West Bengal – Prakash Chik Baraik, Sushmita Dev and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray.
Others who also took the oath included Mukeshbhai J Rathwa (BJP-Gujarat), Mahesh Kewat (BJP, Madhya Pradesh) and Khiangte Laltluagkima (Mizoram).
The newly-elected members later met the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, who congratulated all the new members.
Five members took the oath in Hindi, two in English and two in Bengali.
Some other members elected earlier had already taken their oath during the inter-session period.
Meanwhile, the NPP also congratulated James on the new responsibility.
