Editor,
Through your esteemed newspaper, I would like to urge upon the State government and the Shillong Municipal Board that since the rotary at Laitumkhrah police point is being refurbished and as it is well known fact that the area hosts most renowned schools and colleges of the State and the North East region, it would be right if space in such a public place is dedicated for monuments or statues.
It will be right and thoughtful if a plaque honouring Rev. Thomas Jones, U Soso Tham and Rev. Fr. Hopeful Elias Khariong SDB is erected in such a public place which will serve as a befitting tribute and remembrance to the contributions made by these three educationists and intellectuals to the people of Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep.
Late Rev. Thomas Jones gave the Khasis the written alphabet, Late Soso Tham is remembered by us all as a renowned poet and laureate the society has ever produced and not forgetting the contributions made by Late H Elias in Khasi poetry, critics and literature. And also an occasion to remember all the first settlers of the then Laitumkhrah village before the Salvatorian fathers bought ‘U Lum Tyngkong’.
Such a plaque at the heart of the educational and busiest hub of the State will mark a new beginning to the learning sphere as the State is currently celebrating its 50 years of statehood.
