Shillong, Aug 5: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday said the government is yet to take a final call on implementing the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, which has been extended for three years.
The cabinet last month approved the policy offering Rs 25,000 direct financial incentive to individual EV buyers and 100 per cent waiver on vehicle registration fees to promote eco-friendly transport.
Dhar said the department is studying the financial implications of the incentives. “Suppose if we give incentive on this number of vehicles, what are the financial implications. So we are yet to come to the final conclusion on this,” he said.
On whether Meghalaya is ready for EVs given the power situation, Dhar said the government will have to study all aspects including charging infrastructure, timing and type of incentives before rolling out the policy.
“We cannot make random decisions. We have to take at an appropriate time, the right place,” he added.
Dhar also said parking remains a challenge and the department, along with police, is working on solutions. The State Parking Policy has also been approved.
