The movement launched by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for review of the job reservation policy has evoked widespread public support in various parts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Today, people supporting the movement staged protests outside the residences of ministers and MLAs belonging to various political parties.
A group of residents of Mawprem gathered outside the house of cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh at Lumkshaid and staged a protest there. Holding banners and placards, they condemned the “adamant posture” of the MDA government on the issue.
However, Lyngdoh was not at home as he is currently on a tour to Switzerland.
A group of around 70 villagers including women from Mawkynrew constituency went to the official residence of Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh at Bivar Road here to try to meet him.
Since the MLA was not at home, the villagers called him on his mobile phone and informed him of their desire to meet him. They also handed over a letter to his relative. The letter urged Lyngdoh to speak out and support the demand for review of the reservation policy.
Similarly, a group of villagers from Nongpoh also marched to the house of Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem. The MLA who gave a patient hearing to the villagers also assured that his party, the UDP, would sit and discuss the issue.
Villagers from Umsning also went to the house of Umsning MLA Celestine Lyngdoh to meet him and urge his support for the demand. However, the MLA was not available as the main entrance was locked.
A public gathering was also held near the DC’s office at Khliehriat to express solidarity with the VPP’s demand.
The gathering saw attendance by people from Khliehriat constituency and Sutnga-Saipung constituency.
Speakers at the gathering included East Jaintia Hills VPP leader Damewanhi Rymbai, social worker Deiwi Tongper and leaders of FKJGP, HANM, UHM and JNC from East Jaintia Hills.
