The International Day for Older Persons was today celebrated at Rangthong community hall in South west Khasi Hills district with the felicitation of two senior citizens.
Mementos and gifts were presented to nonagenarians Rosina Syiemlieh of Photjaud-Rangthong and Biolis Thongni of Thiepdiengngan. Additionally, gift items were also distributed to other elderly individuals who attended the programme.
Organised by the District Social Welfare in collaboration with the District Sankalp Hub for empowerment of women, the celebration was held on the theme “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons.
Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar attended the programme as the chief guest. During his speech, he highlighted that the day was dedicated to honouring and celebrating the senior citizens of the district, recognising them as valued and peace-loving members of the community.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining good health, particularly as one ages, and encouraged seniors to prioritise their well-being by taking advantage of health services offered at health centers in the district. The MLA also advised the older individuals to embrace life fully, engaging in enjoyable activities with peers and participating in gatherings and light physical games.
District Social Welfare Officer, E. Tariang said that senior adults and the elderly have long been the backbone of society and the community, having shouldered significant responsibilities to foster the growth and prosperity of younger generations. They have played a vital role in educating families and guiding the youth in both the community and the village at large, he added.
Tariang informed that the day also extends support to the old citizens through initiatives like the CM CARE, which provides financial aid to elderly citizens over 60 who are below the poverty line. He also highlighted the provision of accessible and affordable healthcare specifically tailored to the needs of the elderly and also to ensure that older persons are respected, valued, and free from discrimination on the basis of age, promoting equality and inclusion in society.
