Non-local employees of a post office were pushed back by the dorbar shnong of Langja and members of the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) for not obtaining a no objection certificate (NOC) to work in the area.
The employees were asked to leave the village and a heated argument ensued between the villagers and some members of the dorbar, who alleged that the sordar of the village had surreptitiously handed them the NOC.
Sources said the employees who were chased out were working as Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) for post deliveries.
It may be mentioned that last year the HYC has objected to the appointment of non-local GDS under West Khasi Hills district stating that the post office should appoint locals who could understand the language. The group had also warned dorbar shnongs against issuing of NOC and to withdraw if already issued.
The Meghalaya government too had urged the Centre to amend the draft model notification of the Department of Posts by prescribing knowledge of local language spoken in Meghalaya.
As per the draft model notification of the department, Hindi or English are the prescribed local language as criteria for the recruitment.
