Shillong, Aug 11: Two brothers were killed by lightning while playing football in the Independence Cup tournament at Makrein playground, Mawsnapwir in West Khasi Hills on Tuesday evening.
According to police, the incident took place around 3 pm. Five others, including tournament officials, were also injured in the strike.
The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Mickson Kshiar and 19-year-old Cleverson Kshiar. Both were residents of Lawrapha village in West Khasi Hills and had been staying in the village to attend school.
Police said heavy rain suddenly started during the match and was followed by the lightning strike. The brothers were playing for the Lawrapha team, which was up against Marskuin in the game.
The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital, Nongstoiñ and St. Joseph Hospital for treatment.
