The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) are not showing any bias or leeway towards government vehicles if they violate rules regarding the use of tinted glasses or other matters.
In a social media post on Friday, the STP said that the force has acknowledged suggestions and concerns raised by the public regarding excessive noise from modified exhaust pipes, loud and unnecessary honking and the misuse of high beam headlights.
The STP “is committed to addressing these issues and ensuring a safer and more peaceful environment for everyone,” it said on its social media handles.
On the menace of modified exhaust pipes, the traffic police said that it is conducting regular checks across Shillong to identify and penalise violators with tampered or noisy exhausts. Awareness campaigns are also being initiated to educate vehicle owners on the legal and environmental aspects of noise pollution.
Traffic personnel are also “actively monitoring” no honking zones near schools, hospitals and residential areas and fines will be imposed on those using banned air horns or for honking unnecessarily, the STP said.
A city-wide drive is also being conducted to check for the improper use of high beam headlights on urban roads and to educate drivers about the safe use of headlights to avoid blinding other road users.
The force also said that all fines for compounding offences go into the state government treasury and are not retained by the STP. The traffic police have also acted against government vehicles that violate the norms regarding use of tinted glasses. The window films are removed and vehicles compounded and the STP is “committed to implement the directions (of the Supreme Court in this matter) without any bias or discrimination.”
