Representatives of three villages under Raid Maiong in Ri-Bhoi came forward today to clarify that no land has been sold to the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
On Tuesday, the Confederation of Ri-Bhoi People (CoRP) claimed that the MIDC was in talks to buy up 300 acres of land in Umsiang, which is on the Meghalaya-Assam border.
The village elders who addressed the media today represented Umsiang Mawpdeng, Umsiang Maiong and Umsiang Kraikejam.
CoRP had claimed that the MIDC planned to purchase 300 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore and that the plan had been put into motion without consulting the public and was only discussed with the headmen and traditional chief of the local Raid.
Speaking today, Pynshngain Shylla, the headman of Umsiang Mawpdeng, stated that the allegations made by CoRP against Umsiang were completely unacceptable and unfounded. The three villages strongly refute the claim of any land sale to the MIDC and maintain that they bear no responsibility should any other Raids or villages be involved in such transactions.
