The Nokrek Area Development Committee (NADC) of South Garo Hills has written to West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani to complain about a lack of oversight in the construction of a black-top road from Darengre to Durabanda.
The complaint is specifically against the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (Roads) in the Tura North Sub-Division 1 for allegedly not supervising the ongoing work.
The current road is a dirt track that is narrow and almost impassable during the monsoon season. The public demanded a proper road and the government sanctioned “crores of rupees” for this.
In the estimate, the committee said, is a provision for the use of new nanotechnology for soil stabilisation, which would be a mixture of soil, aggregate, cement and chemical additives. To supervise this work, the overseer would have to be a technically qualified person, the NADC said but it found that the labourers are executing the work according to their own whims and fancies “without any technical officer present at the work site from the concerned department.”
The NADC has asked the Assistant Executive Engineer to supervise the work “but to no avail” and has therefore taken its complaint to the DC.
