Residents of Mynkrem village, Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Jaiñtia Student Union (JSU) Shangpung unit today held a public meeting against the reported move for setting up of a coke factory in the area.
The meeting was held at the Mynkrem Government L.P School wherein it was decided that they will not allow any coke factory to be set up at Mynkrem Shangpung, Ladpohtichnong.
People who attended the meet felt that setting up of the plant will lead to pollution in the area as what is happening in East Jaiñtia Hills district.
Pointing out that when there is a ban of coal mining by the National Green Tribunal, the people questioned how a coke factory will be allowed to be set up in the area. They said that while development is needed, development in the form of setting up of educational institutions is welcomed.
KSU unit general secretary Lutmon Sungoh said that the organisations would soon submit a petition to the district administration and the Mynkrem Shangpung dorbar on the matter.
