The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union have threatened to stage a hunger strike if their demands on remuneration are not fulfilled.
The union’s adviser, Khroo Lamsalanki Pariat, said that reminder letters are periodically sent to the Chief Minister and Labour Minister on their grievances. The demands include a basic floor rate as per the Minimum Wage Act 1948, which the workers want backdated to October 1, 2023 and an increase in the variable dearness allowance from October 1, 2024.
If the state government fails to fulfill their demands by December 17, the union’s members will stage a hunger strike.
