A festival cum awareness programme on Millet production and benefits of the grain was organized by the KVK Ri Bhoi with 60 farmers in attendance, along with the headman of Umwang Them and Purduwa villages.
The programme held at at Umwang Them village was organised yesterday as part of the Krishi Swarna Samriddhi week, which will conclude on March 21.
The event aims to motivate and retain the agriculture by the farmers of the district to enhance income and improve livelihood.
The exhibition showcased different millets varieties like fingermillet, foxtail millet and pearl millet and the processed millet products like porridge, pitha, idli, samosa , steam snacks items and kheer were displayed during the exhibition which also featured an interaction between farmers and scientists.
The event was attended by Dr. B.P. Singh,Head DTAC, ICAR, Umiam where he highlighted the benefits of cultivating and consumption of Millets for better health benefits.
Principal Scientist & Head KVK Ri Bhoi Dr Mokidul Islam talked about natural farming and encouraged the farmers to grow millets in a larger area for enhancing their income through processed products.
Eliza C Syiemlieh, Subject Matter Specialist Home Science gave a short lecture on benefits of processing of millets into value added products.
- Lyngdoh , Deputy Project Director ATMA, Nongpoh highlighted on the importance of growing different varieties of millets and the needs to incorporate millet consumption in the daily diet.
