The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Gregory Shullai has said that some members are not happy with the selection of the new office bearers, which was made public yesterday.
“The BJP has appointed a new set of leaders in Meghalaya. Naturally, some are not too pleased with the selection of office bearers. That’s normal, but the party must do its best with the resources at hand,” he told Highland Post today.
“Any party that does not have a good leader should procure one from somewhere. A good leader is vital if the party is to make some inroads, progress in the coming polls,” he said, referring to the Lok Sabha and autonomous district council elections slated for next year.
The Meghalaya BJP has a fairly new president in Rikman Momin. Yesterday, it was announced that the new party executive committee was approved, composed of six vice-presidents, two general secretaries, six secretaries, a treasurer and women’s wing president.
Speaking about Momin, Shullai said, “The effectiveness of his leadership will be tested next year. I do not envy his task. So, the big question the party functionaries should be asking themselves is: Are we prepared or are we preparing each day to become a force to reckon with next year or are we just happy to be a party functionary.”
Although the BJP did increase its vote share by a small amount, it did not increase its tally of two seats in the Meghalaya Assembly at the state election earlier this year. Referring to Assam, where the saffron party is now in power after years of being also-rans, he said that the party has to put in place strategies for growth in Meghalaya otherwise it will instead decay.
