A Khasi woman, hailing from Balat area of East Khasi Hills, working as a maid in Nagpur, Maharashtra was allegedly physically abused by her employer, identified as Sushma Ujwal Kumar Prakash on April 17.
The case came to light on Friday when her husband informed the matter to a former Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leader of the Delhi unit, Wallam K. Nongsiej.
When contacted Nongsiej informed that the husband alerted him of the plight of his wife. “I immediately took up the matter with Robin Hibu (IPS officer in Delhi) and Vivek Syiem East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police,” Nongsiej told the Highland Post.
According to him, in the afternoon when Nagpur police took up the matter by taking her for treatment to the hospital, he left the matter at that.
But Nongsiej informed that when in the evening he contacted the woman, she informed him that she was feeling weak.
“I again alerted the concerned authorities of the matter,” he said.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said that as soon as he came to know about the incident he reached out to the victim.
“We have reached out to her and have told her to call 112 for the Police emergency services. We are also taking up with Nagpur Police to ensure legal action,” Syiem said.
When asked if the police were making any efforts to bring her back home, the district police chief said that they will wait for communication from their counterpart in Nagpur before deciding.
The woman has been working with the family for the past one month whereas the husband is employed in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
It is learnt that the victim does not want to lodge any FIR against the employer.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been made by Beltarodi Police Station for her stay at a ladies’ hostel in Swadhar Gruh in Revti Nagar, until she boards a flight tomorrow to Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
As per police, Prakash herself has booked a flight ticket to Chennai.
