A man was believed to have jumped into Umiam Lake but emergency service personnel were not able to locate the body despite an extensive search.
Today, a local taxi (ML 05 Y 7753) was found abandoned on the Umiam bridge at around 4:30am. Police searched the vehicle and found that the car keys had been left in the vehicle along with a mobile phone and man’s jacket.
This led the authorities to suspect that the driver, Skhemborlang Kharmawphlang of Mawlai Mawtawar, had jumped from the bridge into the reservoir in an attempt to take his own life.
Fire and Emergency Service personnel and rescue teams searched the lake thoroughly but, at the time of filing this report, he was not found. The search operation will continue on Friday.
