Shillong, Sept 16: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is facing a fight for its political relevance with a large majority of its 12 MLAs seemingly set to leave the party but there is still a parliamentary by-election to be fought and yesterday it went campaigning for its candidate, VGK Kynta, in Jaintia Hills.
Kynta was supported at the rally by party president, cabinet minister and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh, Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh and Sohra MDC Titosstarwell Chyne.
Kynta appealed to the voters of the Jowai to support him so that he could represent them in Parliament. He urged UDP supporters to continue working hard and to bring in more people who are not yet members of the party, assuring that with their support he would win and raise the issues of the people in the Lok Sabha.
Lyngdoh, meanwhile, insisted that the party was still a strong force and that the UDP will remain even if members defect.
Sungoh and Chyne also addressed the gathering, urging voters of the area to give full support to Kynta. The Election Commission has not yet announced the date of the by-election but the vote is expected to be held in the coming weeks.
