Tension simmered at Mawsikar village near Langpih in West Khasi Hills after a group of Assam policemen led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police intruded into the village which falls under Meghalaya territory.
According to reports from the area, the Assam policemen came into the village yesterday with an attempt to erect boundary pillars near Kyrdum on the spot where the blacktopped road constructed by Assam connects with the road constructed by Meghalaya through PMGSY scheme.
Hundreds of villagers from the area protested against the intrusion by the Assam police team which later ensued in a heated verbal exchange between the two sides.
Following strong objection by the villagers, the Assam police personnel left the spot and went back to their outpost located nearby.
According to local villagers, Assam wanted to set up a toll gate on the road that it constructed.
It was also reported that Assam police and Forest Department officials from the neighbouring state had recently visited a community forest at Kyrdum with the intention to convert it into a reserve forest.
