Shillong, May 26: The Mawkhanu football stadium, currently under construction in New Shillong, is set to become the biggest football ground in India, with a seating capacity of 40,000.
According to the Assembly Committee on Government Assurances Chairman, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, the project is making significant progress, with work reportedly on track with an investment of Rs 732 crores.
During an inspection of various key state projects, Tongkhar expressed his gratitude towards Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for championing the initiative.
The committee, which includes MLAs Ampareen Lyngdoh, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh and Ollan Singh Suin, assessed the stadium’s development
Officials present included Mawryngkneng BDO Sanjay D Shira, Chief Engineer (Sports) Manhiam Marbaniang, and representatives of KPC Projects Limited, the contractor building the stadium.
The Mawkhanu football stadium is anticipated to be completed by the latter half of 2028, according to the tender agreement. Tongkhar and the committee members are optimistic about this timeline, believing that the timely completion of the stadium will play a crucial role in establishing Meghalaya as a significant football hub in India.
He said the infrastructure improvements in New Shillong, which include road enhancements, are expected to facilitate better access for the public to enjoy the new facilities.
The committee also visited the Water Sports Centre at Umtham and the tennis court at Umsawli.
Umtham is emerging as Meghalaya’s premier whitewater adventure hub, known for river canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. The state is building a Rs 21-crore, 14-acre dedicated canoe slalom course there to serve as a national training facility and boost adventure tourism.
