Nongpoh, May 26: A man from Rajasthan was arrested for allegedly posing as a senior police officer, DIG Vivekanand Singh Rathore, on social platforms.
The alleged fraudster, identified as Jahul Ali from Kakrali Meo, Alwar was tracked down in a sustained investigation and technical surveillance, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad said.
He said the man was arrested from Jaipur on May 23.
Ali had created a fictitious profile of the IPS officer to deceive a victim into transferring funds.
A case has been lodged at Nongpoh police station under relevant sections for cheating by impersonation, along with IT Act sections for identity theft and online fraud.
Prasad said investigation is on and more individuals may be involved in this fraudulent scheme.
Police have cautioned the public to verify official profiles online and to refrain from sending money based solely on social media solicitations.
