Shillong, Aug 24: Police yesterday arrested the assistant organising secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Jeremiah Pohtmi, in connection with the violence during the pressure group’s August 19 rally.
Pohtmi was arrested on Sunday night by East Khasi Hills police from the Nongmensong neighbourhood. He was produced before the District and Sessions Court on Monday.
Police said Pohtmi was apprehended after a search operation in connection with the rally that descended into violence and unrest in parts of the city. He is among those arrested for the clashes, attacks and disruptions reported after the rally, organised by the KSU to press its five-point charter of demands. Police said investigations are ongoing.
Three senior KSU members, president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben A Najiar, were arrested on the night of August 19 itself.
Meanwhile, the KSU today announced that it will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss a letter received from the state government inviting the students’ body for talks on its five-point charter of demands.
Earlier in the day, the organisation along with its former leaders hoisted the KSU flag at its office in Jaiaw. The union said the programme was organised as part of an effort to strengthen and encourage the organisation as a whole and a prayer was also offered on the occasion.
