One person was convicted recently in a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) case, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem informed today.
According to Syiem, one Strongman Kharbani was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years and to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. In default of the fine, a further imprisonment of six months for an offence punishable under Section 10 of POCSO Act will be imposed on him.
Section 10 covers aggravated sexual assault of a child. The section provides for imprisonment of not less than five years but which may extend to seven years, along with a fine.
The judgment was passed by the Court of MK Lyngdoh, Special Judge (POCSO), East Khasi Hills, on May 26. The case was registered at Mawsynram police station in 2019.
