Authorities in Meghalaya have reunited a man with his family after he had been detained yesterday on suspicion of being an illegal migrant from Bangladesh.
The man had been stopped by the Village Defence Party (VDP) in Sonapyrdi, East Jaiñtia Hills, yesterday. He had, according to the VDP, admitted to crossing into Meghalaya illegally and was on his way to Ladrymbai.
However, police informed today that Mustaf Uddin, as the man was identified as, is mentally unstable and was not in possession of any documents when he was stopped, which may have led the VDP to suspect he was from Bangladesh.
The 53-year-old is actually a resident of Bihara, in the Cachar district of Assam. Upon verifying his antecedents, police reunited him with his family today.
