The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress has expressed concern over the escalating menace of drug abuse in the state, urging collective action to address the crisis.
Mahila Congress President Joplyn Scott Shylla highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on the youth, citing rising reports of drug-related incidents, trafficking networks, and the loss of potential among young people.
She said the Mahila Congress has identified several factors contributing to the problem, including unemployment, peer pressure, easy availability of drugs, broken families, and mental health challenges.
To combat the issue the political wing has suggested measures such as strengthening law enforcement to crackdown on trafficking networks, providing rehabilitation and counselling for addicts, conducting awareness campaigns to educate students about the dangers of drugs, empowering youth through skill development, sports, and entrepreneurship, fostering community involvement and government accountability.
Shylla stressed the need for collective action, stating, “Our youth are not just our future—they are our present, and we cannot afford to lose them to drugs.” She called for building a drug-free Meghalaya, where young people can dream, grow, and lead with pride.
