The Department of Tourism and Travel Management at Lady Keane College celebrated World Tourism Day today on the theme ‘tourism for inclusive growth’.
The occasion was observed online given the Covid-19 pandemic. The chief guest was cabinet minister James PK Sangma.
While addressing the participants, Sangma stressed on the need for eco and niche tourism to drive inclusive growth in the industry. He also complimented the college for taking the initiative and called for similar programmes to be conducted by other tourism stakeholders.
The minister also stressed on tourism entrepreneurship as another dimension that requires urgent attention.
Assistant professor at NEHU, Benjamin Lyngdoh, meanwhile, mentioned the need for capacity building and tourism entrepreneurs in Meghalaya.
As part of this year’s celebration, a competition was organised for college students in Shillong to devise a business model/strategic recovery plan for post-pandemic tourism operations. Diana Kharbithai of St Anthony’s College was judged the winner.
