The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh circle has joined the bandwagon of protestors against the November 21 public hearing at Khliehriat on the subject of a limestone and shale mining project.
The similar question raised by the protestors was the venue of the public hearing at the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Khliehriat while the mining site is at Brichyrnot under Narpuh Elaka.
Member of the KSU also met Deputy Commissioner E Kharmalki in this regard and questioned what was behind the intention of holding the hearing at the DC’s office in Khliehriat.
Other organisations have also raised similar questions with the East Jaiñtia National Council (EJNC) decision to raise black flags in Khliehriat on November 11 to protest against the public hearing. The decision was arrived at after the DC sought to explain that the public hearing cannot be cancelled based on the decision taken by the Ministry of Forest and Climate Change.
Another organisation, the Khasi Jaiñtia National Union (KJNU) too had served a 10-day ultimatum to the DC, demanding the cancellation of a public hearing.
