Shillong, Aug 27: Schools receive midday meal scheme allocations only for Classes 6 to 8 but stretch these to cover all students.
State Food Commission Chairman Donald P Wahlang learned about this during an extensive inspection of fair price shops, Anganwadi centres and schools in Dadenggre subdivision to check delivery of food schemes.
Wahlang led the team that inspected FPS dealers at Dadeng Deching Bazar, Modelgre and Bolchugre, Anganwadi centres at Asimgre, Modelgre and Songadinggre and Dadenggre Lower Primary School, Tiny Rose Upper Primary School and Dadenggre Puri Higher Secondary School.
During the visit, the commission found that midday meal allocations currently cover only Classes 6 to 8, while schools are adjusting to feed all students. Wahlang instructed the Subdivisional Officer to increase requirements for the schools.
In Anganwadis, the team verified distribution of food supplements under ICDS to children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Supply of atta, dal, soy chunks, eggs and vegetables was found to be regular. Instructions were issued to ensure water supply and other basic amenities.
FPS shops were audited to ensure AAY, NFSA and non-NFSA beneficiaries receive quality rice and rations on time. Dealers were asked to display vigilance committee members and beneficiary lists on notice boards for transparency.
