The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has intensified its own checking of work permit in many areas in the city and pushed back labourers without valid documents.
The check, which began yesterday, continued today at the JN Stadium in Polo and various places in Nongthymmai.
The KSU is peeved by the state government’s delay to implement the inner line permit (ILP) and Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016.
It has also been reported that during a check conducted at the JN stadium workers were allegedly assaulted.
According to one Sonu who is a technician from Delhi, all labourers were asked to stand in queue and went there to find out the reason. He said while standing in a queue he was assaulted by the KSU members and got a chipped tooth.
Sonu who is engaged to operate a track machine said he will abandon the work and return as directed by his company as such incidents pose a great threat to the lives of workers.
A driver from Pune, who was waiting for goods to be unloaded near the stadium, said he was slapped and forcefully asked to go to the ground. He said he was let off after showing his license.
The checking of licenses and documents comes after the KSU erected an ILP check gate at Pahammawlein village along the National Highway 6 in Ri Bhoi district on July 6, to prevent entry of suspected illegal migrants into the state.
However, the check gate was razed and then burnt down today.
KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah stated that the police had destroyed the check gate at around 11:30 am. He said he was informed that an excavator was used to break the check gate and then burnt.
