The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL) to pay compensation to a girl who was injured after being electrocuted in Mawkohphet, South West Khasi Hills district.
Ibapynhun Iawphniaw, a nursery student, had to have both her arms amputated and is still receiving hospital treatment for other injuries incurred in the April 21 incident.
KSU president Lambokstar Marngar said that the MePDCL has never put up fencing around the power transformer which is close to the school in the area.
In a letter to the MePDCL chief engineer, Marngar accused power department of negligence which had caused disability to the child. He added that due compensation, medical aid and life-time payment should be paid to the victim.
He further demanded that the department should carry out an inspection to check the condition of the transformer, electric poles and work out on replacements in the district and Mawsynram block to prevent such incidents.
