Shillong, Oct 17: The safety of students at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Mawsynram has come under question after the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), South East Khasi Border Circle flagged alleged substandard construction at the school’s permanent campus.
Led by president Kyrmen Shangdiar, the organisation inspected Phase-A and Phase-B sites on October 2 and found deficiencies in work executed by a contractor from Assam under the supervision of the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation Limited (MTDC).
A representation was submitted to the JNV Regional Office, Shillong on October 16.
According to FKJGP, JNV Shillong officials admitted they had also detected defects and reported them to MTDC, but work continued without corrective action.
Shangdiar has demanded a joint inspection by MTDC to verify defects and ensure safety before shifting students. The Regional Officer assured that the representation will be forwarded to the Managing Director, MTDC.
The organisation also urged JNV to expedite shifting to completed Phase-A buildings — including Principal’s office, staff quarters, hostels and school building — already handed over by CPWD.
In a separate meeting with Jio officials, FKJGP raised prolonged network failures in Mawsynram and Lawbah.
Jio attributed the Mawsynram outage to fibre-optic damage due to road work on Phlangwanbroi–Ranikor stretch, and Lawbah outage to tower shutdown after a dispute with a landowner.
FKJGP has given Jio two months to restore connectivity in Mawsynram. For Lawbah, Jio Shillong said a team will survey new tower sites next week.
