KSU concerned by state’s miserable education grade

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed concern over the poor Performance Grading Index (PGI) score for Meghalaya, the latest of which was issued by the Union Education Ministry recently where the state finished last.

According to the KSU the PGI report should raise alarms about the state of the education sector in Meghalaya.

The pressure group said that, over the years, it has highlighted various issues in regards to the education system of the state but very little has been done by the government.

“For the third consecutive year, Meghalaya is the only state to remain in Grade 5 and this clearly goes to show that our education system is not at all robust and neither is it showing any signs of improvements,” the KSU said.

Highlighting certain key factors which need to be countered urgently, the KSU stated that schools and colleges need proper infrastructure, especially those in rural areas.

Secondly, the plight of the teachers in the state is deplorable, the KSU pointed out.

“Often it is seen that teachers are out on the streets to protest for their rights. Most of the teacher’s salary doesn’t get to them in time and it take months which makes the teachers to get another alternative work to sustain their family, hence not being able to give the proper attention to the students,” the union stated.

Thirdly, the KSU said that the government has set up schools and colleges in every corner of rural Meghalaya, not just in the towns.
