In its bid to crack down on non-tribal businessmen who fail to obtain necessary clearances from the council, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) conducted a surprise inspection today in the Killing area of Ri-Bhoi, led by Executive Member in charge of the Trade Department, Gigur Myrthong.
The inspection team included Nongstoiñ MDC Gabriel Wahlang, Jirang MDC Victor Rani, Raid Marwet traditional chief Ken Syiem and Superintendent of Enforcement Alberic S Lanong, among others.
During the check, it was discovered that many non-tribal-operated stone crushers lacked legal documentation and had not renewed their KHADC licences. Some, it is suspected, were operating under illegal benami arrangements.
The district council issued show-cause notices to the suspected offenders, giving them two days to respond.
Speaking to reporters, Myrthong expressed deep concern over the apparently large number of businesses owned by non-tribals that are being run without adhering to the KHADC rules.
Myrthong also informed that regular inspections will be conducted in the future in collaboration with the Enforcement Department. Three new teams will soon be established to cover Khanapara, Pillangkata and Umtynga villages in Ri-Bhoi.
