The Jowai circle of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) held a meeting with the District School Education Officer (DSEO) to present a memorandum on the critical challenges at Kiang Nangbah Government Higher Secondary School.
These concerns included severe infrastructure deficiencies, such as limited classrooms, outdated computer labs, lack of smart learning facilities and an under-equipped library.
There is a critical shortage of faculty, with just one teacher for 350 students in the morning section, the JSU said. Additionally, language teachers are forced to handle Arts, Science and Commerce streams due to faculty gaps.
There are another 500-plus in the day section but the classrooms are small, which worsens learning conditions. In addition, there is unclear land ownership status and miscalculations in the school budget, the pressure group added.
The DSEO has committed to forwarding these concerns to the relevant authorities for urgent intervention, prioritising faculty recruitment, budget corrections, infrastructure enhancement and addressing the land ownership issue, a JSU press release stated today.
The union welcomed the assurance but called for immediate action, emphasising that the quality of education is suffering due to faculty shortages and overcrowding. Students are struggling with limited instructional time and, without urgent intervention, learning standards will continue to decline, it added.
