The Khliehriat circle of the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) today wrote to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, A Baranwal, regarding the level of dust pollution on and around National Highway 6.
The highway is in a deplorable condition but still experiences heavy traffic. With the rains abating now, soil on the surface is kicked up as dust and the JNC suggested to the DC that water should be sprayed on the surface to mitigate the problem.
The dust is bad for commuters but also affects residents of nearby areas, including shopkeepers, pedestrians, students, etc.
The practice of watering the roads has been successfully implemented in neighbouring towns and places and has proven to be a cost-effective solution, the JNC said.
The pressure group recommended that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) be given responsibility over this matter.
On the slow efforts to fix the road, the JNC said that now that the monsoon is ending, NHAI’s contractors should speed up work; NHAI had previously said that work to fix the highway had been slowed down due to heavy rains.
