Congress candidate who recently contested the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections from 12-Barato Mukroh Constituency has been accused of encroaching into the jurisdiction of the Karbi Anglong district, Assam for campaigning.
The candidate, Banikas Laban, was left astounded when she received a call from the Jrikyndeng Police Station that a complaint was lodged against her by the people of Karbi Anglong with no further explanation on the reasons behind it.
Reportedly, the candidate had visited Mowluber village, located along the inter-state border with Assam, which the Karbis claimed belonged to Assam.
Today, Laban and the Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) submitted a memorandum to West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh to speak to his counterpart in Karbi Anglong on the issue.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), Hamren Regional Committee had accused Laban and other political parties of having crossed 40 km from the interstate border to campaign during the recently concluded MDC elections.
A complaint was also submitted by the KSA to Karbi Anglong District Commissioner Sarangapani Sharma. It claimed that Laban holds dual voter IDs, one from Assam (West Karbi Anglong) and another from Meghalaya, which according to the organisations, constitutes a serious violation of electoral laws.
